Research

I work on how network structure shapes innovation and coordination. Most of my research applies network science and agent-based simulation to firms, markets and cultural evolution; some of it wanders further, into papal elections and the history of economic thought.

Research interests

Network science
Networks connect the micro and the macro of complex systems — who is tied to whom explains what the whole system can do.
Organizational networks
Network methods applied to collaboration, advice and communication within and between organizations.
Innovation
Which features of organizations and ecosystems make new combinations more likely, and how discovery unfolds over time.
Agent-based modeling
A generative approach to science — growing macro patterns from explicit rules of interaction, and testing those models rigorously.
Complexity economics
Economies as adaptive systems with non-linear, emergent behaviour rather than equilibria.
Macroeconomics
From the history of economic thought to quantitative models of business cycles.
